Hotel & Gastronomy

Why professional hotel and gastronomy assistants are urgently needed in Myanmar

As any expert will tell you Myanmar is still only a tourist destination for insiders. It does however allow you to experience the real Asia. The Hotel trade, therefore, has a great poten-tial for expansion. There is no basic training in this field and only a short introductory course is given. The main aim is to find jobs abroad for those who have taken these short courses. They can though, only be employed as cheap labour and this is not a sustainable arrangement. Thus, CVT Myanmar offers a three-sided, all-round training scheme for the local Hotel trade. This professional, long-term education for hotel and gastronomy assistants aims at a sustainable solution for the individual employees as well as for the tourism sector of the country.

Theoretical Course at CVT

The apprentices attend courses at CVT once a week. Besides general subjects they learn about Kitchen, Service, Household and Reception duties to give the trainees a fundamental basic knowledge of the Hotel trade.

Practical courses at CVT

During two Practical Training Courses, each lasting two weeks, the most important theoretical information is put into practice and culminating in a final exam; the preparation of a menu.

“Earn while you learn”: Practical training at the company

Along with their practical training at CVT, the apprentices work for the rest of the week in a hotel where they can put their knowledge into practice. For their work during the week they receive payment which covers their living costs and is often a big financial help to the apprentices’ families.

Final exams and graduation

The final exams for the H&G students are taken in modules. At the end of the year the apprentices take oral and written exams covering the all the material.
The students are tested both on their specialized knowledge and, more importantly, how to apply this in a hotel context. Great importance is placed on the students being able to put what they have learnt into practice. Students are required to prove their practical knowledge in the kitchen and dining room services. The housekeeping and reception aspects are also tested by acting out short role-plays.
